* Original handwritten note on the back of historical photo:
"This South Commercial Street bridge was built in 1862
by J.H. Hayden and Daniel Clark at the cost of $7000 paid
equally by Salem and Marion County. A first bridge built
by Mr. John had washed out in the flood of 1861. Spans
for the new covered bridge were 200 ft.
"This structure stood until the 1890's and one source of
information says it was replaced to enable the street cars
to travel up South Commercial Street to Odd Fellows
Cemetery. The covered bridge would not give the cars
trolley clearance. This photo should be attributed to Wiley
Kenyon who was Salem's first mayor."
