Buckets of soap were lifted into the fuller. This washing machine used heat, friction and soap to pre-shrink the woolen fabric and also draw the weave tight.
Fulling was considered one of the most important jobs in the mill as poor workmanship could ruin a bolt of cloth and waste the efforts of many people.
