Housing in 1850's Oregon was a premium comodity. It was not uncommon for more than one family to occupy a structure. The Jason Lee home was divided into apartments, two up and two down.
Compact living was not a hardship, rather it was a luxury to have a warm, dry place to eat, sleep, work and raise a family. This was apparently our version of a studio apartment with shared kitchen area.
