A safety harness was required equipment for the scaffolding climb. The line held in the project manager's left hand was clipped to a cable that fed from a reel secured at the top of the scaffolding. As one climbed, the cable was wound onto the reel automatically. A brake on the reel kept it from unwinding if one were to slip and fall from the narrow ladder.
