Gilder Pete McKearnan applies sheets of 23K gold leaf to the Pioneer. The reddish color of the statue is caused by the tinted "size" that is applied to the cleaned surface. The size is what allows the gold leaf to adhere. The tint enables gilders to discern where the size has been applied and where it has not. To the touch, the size is ever-so-slightly tacky.
